The three-day colloquium will focus on the contributions of pre-20th century European thought to the intellectual history of communication and media studies and its influence on the conceptualisation of current theory and practice. Original papers locating and tracing the pertinent literary, philosophical, legal, and/or social scientific discourse regarding the history of theoretical claims and/or practical applications of communication (or media) in society are welcome, as are contributions focusing on the problem of “conceptual” or “theoretical imperialism” with suggestions of alternative histories of communication (and media) theory in non-European traditions.
